He's Here!
Our sweet little Caleb James Walters arrived on Wednesday November 19, 2008 at 11:40am. He weighed in at 7lbs 11oz and was 20in long. He's been eating and sleeping great thus far. Carly did an AMAZING job during the labor and delivery, and is doing great now. We're humbled and grateful to get to be his parents.

Zoe's not quite sure what to think of him, but she's figured out he's something new, something that's staying, and something she's not allowed to poke in the eyes.

Carly's mom Martha (Marmie) was with us during the labor and delivery and was a TREMENDOUS help.

Caleb gets his first name from his uncle Caleb, and his middle name from Carly's dad James Geiger. Funny thing, Caleb James & his uncle Caleb Festus share the same birthday! Happy 26th birthday Caleb - don't expect such a cool birthday present next year.
We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

FOCUS kids
Here's a fun picture of the FOCUS Staff kids. (I'm not sure at all why this is underlined...can't make it stop.) The Cryer kids, the Spivey's girl, and Zoe. Carly says it took at least 10 pictures to capture this one where everyone was looking! Pretty great, huh?!

And she's off!
It's official. She's mobile. Have we baby-proofed the house yet? Not really, but we're becoming more motivated to do so each day! You can see her dragging along some balloons she loved playing with. And when she gets going, she is determined.

Introducing....
...Caleb James! Well, not quite "INTRODUCING" introducing him yet, but here are our first couple of pictures of him. Carly is 19 weeks pregnant, so we're about halfway to meeting our SON! Amazing! The sonogram pictures were as clear as day that there is indeed a stem on this apple.
So far he has a little button nose like Zoe. Carly tells me that babies are born with pug noses so that they can breathe while breastfeeding. How cool is that. Snorkel provided - batteries not included.

It's hard to see his face here, but I think he is on his side - his eyes to the left side of the picture and his mouth to the right.
Viewer discretion is advised:

In the Garden
So we've been experimenting with our first garden. Tomatoes, chives, bell peppers, garlic, jalapenos, banana peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, okra... Well, let's just say that the zucchini's have taken over. After being in Texas for 11 days, and lots of rain here in Wichita while we were gone, we checked on our garden turned forest and found a couple peppers ready, and an elephantine zucchini! So much harvesting regularly! The thing is as almost as long as Zoe. So when you come over, we'll have zucchini bread, muffins, you name it - for the next year.

On the Road
Sorry for the long delay in posting. The Walters clan is on the road in Texas for the next several days. Here are some good pics from our stay with dear friends, the Leschs.
And hopefully in about a week, we'll be able to post some sonogram pictures from baby numero dos! Yes, you heard right, DOS!

Celebrating Grandpa Doc

Ralph Clayton “Doc” Loyd
October 30, 1926 – March 5, 2008
Ralph Clayton Loyd, was born in Dallas, TX, Oct. 30th, 1926. The family soon moved back to their family home in Arkansas. He enjoyed his childhood playing with cousins on their grandparent’s farm. When Doc was eight and his sister Christine just a few months old, their father was killed in a car accident. In an already difficult financial time, the depression, his mother went back to school and received her teaching certificate. When Doc was in High School, life was shadowed by World War II. His family moved to Riverside, California where his mom got a job at a military base. Mattie, Doc’s mother, met and married Gerald Reilly who completed the family. There they enjoyed the larger military and high school community. Doc would talk often of families looking out for each other, celebrating together, rolling up the carpets and dancing, bonfires, playing guitars and singing. It was a season made even sweeter when he met Rose Marie Miramontes. She was the love of his life. When Dad was eighteen and about to leave for the Army Air Corps’, he and Rosie were married.
The war now over, Doc returned to California, Rosie and precious daughter Sherrin Lea. He completed his education at Heald’s School of Engineering. He received his Civil Engineers license and worked for Alameda County in the roads department for the next 35 years.
Sherrin was joined by four more siblings, Randy, Lee, June and Neil. Doc had a high commitment to family life. We enjoyed many vacations camping, discovering and appreciating God’s created beauty. Dad taught all of us to play the guitar and we enjoyed chores, car trips, camp fires...while we were singing.
Doc and Rosie were valued participants in Faith Lutheran Church, PTA, Boy and Girl Scouting. Doc often taught First Aid training and back country survival, securing his nick name “Doc”. After many years of service, he received the Boy Scout’s highest honor, the Silver Beaver.
After retiring, Doc and Rose moved to Golden, Colorado. Doc joined the Elks Club and an antique tool club. He also continued singing, with his wonderful baritone voice, in his church choir. Doc and Rose were also Hospice volunteers. They made fast friends with people from their church sharing music, laughter and life together.
Doc and Rose also enjoyed the opportunity after retiring, to travel. They spent mom’s retirement money on a six month trip discovering Europe. They loved new places, people, food, music...They were always adventuresome. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they went to The Holy Land. Their favorite travel was to visit their children and 12 grandchildren; Kyle, Christopher, Mark, Jennifer, Calee, Amy, Caleb, Brady, Kate, Kelsey, Nicole, and Justin.
Quote? He had a long standing joke. “Hey Skinner, did you take a shower today?” Reply, “why no Doc, is there one missing?”
One of our favorite “pictures” of Dad is when mom was dying. She was home in the living room in a hospital bed. My brother Lee was eating some snacks and she asked him for an apple, then a cracker than cheese. He then teasing asked her if she also wanted wine with her cheese. When she
said “YES!” she would, Dad found his best bottle of wine, pulled out his finest wine glasses and we all gathered to celebrate the moment together. That is Dad, always celebrating the precious moments of life.
Memorial gifts can be made to Westwoods Community Church 4980 Kipling St., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 or to the Alzheimer's Association 455 Sherman St., #500 Denver, CO 80203.

new happenings
After some research, divine encounters (really, it's quite a story) and a trip to Oklahoma, we finally entered the ranks of the mini van family. We got a great deal on what we hope will be a great car for us - a 2000 Honda Odyssey. We've got plenty of room if you want a ride!
And Zoe is doing some fun new stuff as well. She's not quite big enough for this bouncy seat yet, but she seems to like it.
She's still showing off that big smile of hers.
But now she's starting to stick out her tongue like Gene Simmons. Guess who taught her that? I won't say her name, but it starts with a C...
Our cousins Sam & Jess were in town with their beautiful Lilias Meadow. Here's papa hard at work.

More Christmas Fun
Some more fun pictures from Christmas.

Family picture after the Melikalikimaka Christmas nativity scene - I know, it's weird. Zoe got to be baby Jesus this year. Caleb was grateful because it was getting a little awkward for him to keep playing that part in a loincloth.
